“At night, when the objective world has slunk back into its cavern and left dreamers to their own, there come inspirations and capabilities impossible at any less magical and quiet hour. No one knows whether or not he is a writer unless he has tried writing at night.” – H.P Lovecraft
Some of my most creative ideas relating to writing, styling and other parts of my life, appear to me in the middle of the night, (which comes in rather handy given the light case of insomnia that I have). My love of darkness and need of working in complete solitude (with the exception of Wagner who I tend to listen to while I’m writing) has been a part of my life for as long as I remember. From time to time however, even the darkest night, no amount of Der Ring des Nibelungen can help with life’s petite obstacles (lack of access to the internet at 2am or a broken Mac for starters).
It’s been nearly two weeks since my last post, for which I apologise profusely but sometimes things are indeed, Beyond My Control. However, the time spent away from writing has not been completely wasted, I’ve been occupied in that time with moving houses and playing interior decorator, another great passion of mine.
The goal that I set myself was to build a dream home, filled with antiques, amazing art and all that I could fabricate from my imagination. The limited budget has been the biggest challenge yet and it’s going to take some time before the project is complete, though knowing me, it will never be complete, as I’ll always want to change something and make refinements. In the meantime, I’m buried under copious copies of The World Of Interiors (which I’m utterly obsessed with), as well as fabric swatches from G.P & J Baker, which are so incredibly beautiful that I’m actually toying with the notion of having a dress made from one of their curtain designs!
I believe that every creative process starts with an inspiration and in my case it’s a particular painting, piece of architecture or perhaps an item of antique furniture, that helps me to write about fashion. In fact, I nearly always end-up in a museum or antique shop when I’m feeling uninspired or suffering from writers’ block.
Even though my mind at the present moment is fully occupied with decorating the flat, it doesn’t mean that I have abandoned fashion. As much as fashion is influenced by art, art can also be influenced by fashion. And with that point in mind, I’d like to share with you all some of the most inspiring fashion photos from the year thus far, as well as my own personal world of interiors.
